Advanced 2-Day Workshop: Riso Animation
Dates: Tuesday, June 9 and Thursday, June 11
Time: 6:00–9:00 PM
Location: Posy Press (Goat Farm Arts Center)
Join Samantha Richardson of Posy Press for a hands-on workshop focused on transforming video and animation into short looping Risograph prints.
During this two-day workshop, participants will learn how to break motion into printable frames and translate digital animation into layered, physical output. We’ll cover exporting frames, generating contact sheets, choosing color separations, and preparing files for print in Photoshop (with alternative tools discussed), along with a light introduction to how After Effects can support this workflow.
We’ll also cover the fundamentals of working with the Risograph, including file setup, changing color drums, and achieving accurate registration across multiple colors.
Participants will bring their own source material and leave with printed contact sheets and high-resolution scans. After printing, we’ll scan and share files, then stitch frames back together into looping animations.
Day one focuses on file prep, frame processing, and workflow setup. Day two focuses on printing, scanning, and reconstruction.
Participants are encouraged to bring a short video, digital animation, or hand-drawn animation to work from. GIFs can be used, but higher-resolution source material is strongly recommended for best results. Basic familiarity with Photoshop is recommended. We recommend taking Intro to Riso before attending.
Requirements:
Laptop (Mac or PC)
Adobe Photoshop (required)
Adobe After Effects (recommended)
About Samantha Richardson:
Samantha Richardson is an artist and designer exploring animation through Risograph printing, translating moving image into tactile, frame-based processes.
She was recently an artist-in-residence with the Public Art Futures Lab, where she developed and exhibited a large-scale Riso animation bridging digital animation and physical print processes.
